As the official Monty Python Spamalot site states, the show is "lovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail." Despite differing in many ways from the film, most notably in its parodies of Broadway theater, it is a faithful adaptation from screen to stage.
The book and lyrics were written by one of Monty Python's founding members and performers Eric Idle. He also collaborated with John Du Prez on the music. The wildly successful show was originally directed by Mike Nichols and has been running on Broadway since March 17, 2005 and won three Tony Awards with no apparent end in sight. Previews of the show began in Chicago's Shubert Theatre on December 21, 2004 and officially opened there on January 9, 2005. The shows were nearly sold out and it began to preview on Broadway in the Shubert Theatre on February 14, 2005. After some minor changes and nearly sold shows, Spamalot officially opened on March 17th. Since then, productions of the show have opened in Las Vegas and London and are scheduled to begin in November in Melbourn.
Although the cast has since changed, the show started its run with such big names as Tim Curry as King Arthur, David Hyde Pierce as Sir Robin, and Hank Azaria as Sir Lancelot (as well as a number of other roles).
The show, much like the movie it is based on, revolves around a parody of the Arthurian legend. Some of the characters are based on those of the legend, with others that were invented by the brilliant, and more often than not, comically demented minds of the cast of Monty Python. Some classic Arthurian characters but with a twist include King Arthur, Sir Lancelot the Homicidally Brave, and Sir Bedevere the Strangely Flatulent while others that were invented by the cast of Monty Python include Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-as-Sir-Lancelot, Sir Not-Appearing-In-This-Show, and the ever popular one line Not-Dead Fred. These characters, as well as many others, chronicle the adventures of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table through the countryside of England and their encounters with the Black Knight, the Knights Who Say 'Ni", and The Killer Rabbit of Antioch on their way to find the Holy Grail.
